PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND
I qualified from Leeds University in 1978 with distinction and was the gold medallist.
Following housemen jobs in Leeds, I travelled to London and trained at the Hammersmith Hospital, The Royal Brompton Hospital and the London Chest Hospital where I developed an interest in Cardiology. After general medical training at the Whittington and University College Hospitals I was appointed as a Cardiology Registrar at the National Heart Hospital and subsequently became a Senior Registrar at Hammersmith Hospital. My medical thesis (MD) was researched at the National Heart Hospital. I became a member of the Royal College of Physicians in 1980 and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1990.
I was appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist to the Royal Free Hospital in 1987. I have developed a major interest in coronary artery disease, coronary angiography and coronary angioplasty including the treatment of angina and heart attacks. I also have a major interest in heart failure and the treatment of valvular heart disease and cardiomyopathies.
 
ASSOCIATIONS
I am a member of the British Cardiac Society, the British Cardiac Interventional Society, the British Medical Association and the Royal College of Physicians.
 
RESEARCH PUBLICATIONS
I have numerous research publications in all aspects of general adult cardiology. I have written a Coronary Care Manual that was published as a book by Oxford University Press and have contributed to major textbooks in cardiology.
